As artists, our goal is to create art. Art is genuine, it is intentional, it comes from emotional, social, and political motivations. It connects us humans together and, I believe, is the only truly accessible way of doing so. Art of all kinds allows anyone to communicate and think deeply about their beliefs, emotions, trauma, and experience as humans, and to connect with others who they may relate to.
AI is incapable of this kind of engagement with art. It does not think, it does not feel, it does not have beliefs, emotions, trauma, or experiences. It can't formulate original ideas or new ways of expressing old ideas. It can't be genuine to itself because it has no self. Its "creations" are just recreations of preexisting works without the permission of the artists behind those works. It, like many things in our world today, is artificial, perfectly catered to be as safe and profit-generating as possible.
AI data centers are sucking up water resources, requiring entire power plants to stay running, and making people sick just by the amount of sound they produce. Tech companies are becoming ever more involved in our governments–federal, state, and local. And now AI is even being used for warfare.
It is for all of these reasons and more that I completely reject generative AI and refuse to use it for anything, especially for creating art. At no point in the process of researching, composing, editing, performing, or recording a piece of music do I use generative AI.
My hope is that it is clear that my music is completely genuine and personal, and that others may connect with and find comfort in it. I hope that we as artists and art lovers can overcome generative AI and strive for a future where all art is human-made.
Sincerely,
